Grades K-6, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, Undergraduate, Graduate, Adult learners, Informal / multi-age

The Multiplex is a new platform that extends our work to date on the STEM for All Video Showcase. It aggregates all presentations that have been presented from 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 and we will add those from 2020 in June. The Multiplex is free and open to all researchers, teachers, policy makers, parents and others interested in improving STEM teaching and learning. You can access it at https://multiplex.videohall.com/

Users can now create video playlists that they can disseminate to their collegial and professional networks. Playlists can be made around a particular topic of interest, or they may be those submitted by a particular organization, or those funded by a particular program. We look forward to see how you make use of it. Playlists can be shared with other though email or social media. We also host a monthly theme and invite your participation. Themes include an expert webinar panel, a curated video playlist, a facilitated discussion, a blog and resources. We are eager to hear how we can continue to enhance this platform to meet your needs.

This video has had approximately 279 visits by 206 visitors from 130 unique locations. It has been played 123 times as of 05/2023.

To all visitors to the showcase: We invite you to take a look at the newly created STEM for All Multiplex https://multiplex.videohall.com/ which has all videos presented in past STEM for all Video Showcases, and will have the 2020 videos added as well. You can create video playlists of presentations from your institution, or from a particular researcher, or on a particular topic. We'd love you to try it out and send us feedback about what you like about it and changes you might suggest. Thanks!!!!

Joni - How might someone thinking about an NSF proposal use this to discover what project that are similar might inform their own project design?

Thanks Alan, Great question. If you are writing an NSF proposal you might want to search on the filter by NSF program. Then narrow your search by using keywords or text field to find videos that are similar in theme to what you are trying to propose. It will be very useful to view what has been funded that is somewhat similar to what you are proposing. You may also find strategies, tools, etc. that you may want to incorporate.

The multiplex seems like a good way to turn the the STEM for All Video Showcase into an ongoing resource. Will the video content come only from STEM for All Showcase participants, or will there be separate / additional opportunities for contributing?

I'm also curious about the line "see how projects evolve over time". I'm curious as to what that might look like. How do the organizers see that working?

Patrick, hi. Yes, the Multiplex will only houses videos submitted to the showcase. In some instances projects have contributed 3 or 4 years running. If you search the Multiplex by name (for example, Barbara Rogoff) you can see videos from each year and see the evolution of her project work. This is something that is not possible within a single video showcase. In addition we have a theme each month and invite presenters who have addressed that theme in multiple years to present, provide resources, and host a discussion. So we are making progress, while still figuring things out.

Thanks so much for providing this project!  It is wonderful to know that the videos created by my team and also by all the other project teams will have such a wonderfully designed platform to continue to reach students, educators and the public across the world, into the future!

I look forward to exploring more projects from previous years in the Multiplex!

The support of you and your colleagues is amazing and fundamentally important to the persevering of small districts with limited views on what STEM is and how they can be involved.

The Multiplex continues a core element that drives us to find angles and yet not leave behind the "basics".  Thinking about further topics we're getting back to offering media discussions based on STEM reading beyond the text books...and classroom.  Would hope to use our years of videos as well as others wonderful views to be part of the extension.

Thanks so much for moving the Multiplex forward and enabling small innovations to find their pathways into STEM!

I really appreciate the opportunity to access all the videos from previous Video Showcases in the same space, and the added searching and playlist features.

I am also intrigued by the opportunity to continue the dialogue and questions to the authors of past videos - but how would one know if such a comment/question has been posted?

We will have a notification system, where presenters get notified. I would like presenters to have the option of being notified immediately, once a day or once a week of activity on any of their presentations. How often would you want to be notified? We don't want to burn presenters out.

My preference is to have immediate notification as often the posting may become buried and lost their meaning over the time of a week.  Further, if we are using them for teaching purposes we'll need that documentation to align with expectations.

    Thanks!

Love this project.  Such documentation across consecutive years is powerful and important for expanding progress in STEM Education.

What are some of the ways you envision the multiplex being used in say 10, 20, 30 years?  Shorter-term, I could see one-day events throughout a calendar year that encourage people to interact with the videos.  I enjoy the Video Showcase week, but it falls on a busy time in the semester and hence, I don't get to comment as much as I would like.  I could see more events throughout the year supporting greater engagement.

Yes, that is our intention for each month to explore a theme in depth and invite people to come back and interact. Here is an example of a theme that we ran, Broadening Participation Through Community Enagagement. We hope to get better at doing this as we move on. Any suggested themes that any viewers would be interested to propose?

    Hi Joni,

I wasn’t aware of the ability to see the evolution of some of these projects over time! What a great idea! I wonder if there’s a way to embed that in the framework of the multiplex, so that when viewing one year’s entry, if there are other years connected to it, you might easily be able to access them as well?

Excellent idea. Right now the only way is to search for a presenter and then you see all their presentations show up from all years. But having some indicator of multiple iterations would be interesting.

Beautiful and really crisp and engaging video. I guess the pressure was on for you, Joni, and your team to provide an excellent example.  A+!

One question I have: how do we avoid a sense of overwhelm in light of so many videos. Search functions are great, but what are some user scenarios you thought about?

    Martin,

Our current video shows one such user scenario in action..and to the benefit of our whole activity on that day!   The classroom teacher uses the past year's video to show the Aeropod and their use in the past.

They see themselves in roles (literally!) and move to advance from their 6th grade selves!  They listened to what a patent means and sees a very simple tool that moves from motions that they'd studied and measured with ways they could sense.   Their response was completely unplanned or scripted but truly a fine method to integrate STEM at the "roots" with developmentally appropriate inroads.

Martin to answer your prior question about how do you prevent people from being overwhelmed. We have two thoughts so far, but we are evolving.

    1. The Multiplex allows all the search filters to interact with each other, so you can narrow your search very effectively by combining all the fitters. (e.g year, program that funded it, keyword, grade level, even state....)

    2. The theme of the month will help direct attention to a particular theme... do you have suggested themes Martin?

This challenge seems ripe for the application of AI, particularly when thinking on a 5+ year time scale.  There are terrific examples in the industry already both in a development as well as applied way.  Commercial music provides, perhaps, one of the most rich and intriguing models.  For decades sorting, archival and queries of music were accomplished simply by genre, artist name, album title, year etc.  The Music Genome project revolutionized the industry in the late 1990s and early 2000s by looking at music in a different way - describing its essence in a most fundamental way, hence the reverence to genes and DNA.  A song would be evaluated beyond who makes it, when and rather, what does it sound like.  Descriptions (genes) include qualities like tempo, mood, presence of background vocals, pitch of lead singer etc.  Grouping of similar songs then, the primary interest of individuals looking to listen/purchase music, just as in Martin’s question above with the Multiplex, is how do I find patterns and similarities.  Pandora Music was the commercial expression of that research effort and the general approach has been adopted widely in the industry.  What would the STEM for All Genome Project look like and is the Multiplex our Pandora?  And to whet the creative appetite, I wonder what the Shazam of all that would look like ;-)

I love this idea. We already made a baby step in that direction by having an computer generated algorithm to find related videos. This can be improved for sure. There are some that are related due to theme, others because they have overlapping presenters, others because they continue the work from year to year. There is much to be done... perhaps you are interested?

I know how much work you have put into developing these virtual interactive information platforms and the successes you have had in doing so. In the last few years I have enjoyed searching out projects that I have interest in -either directly or just because. As the complexity and size of searchable information is finger tips away I have started to find myself wondering how to search for that information I’m really looking for. Could I ask for anything that connects …. to ….? We have come alone way from the alphabetical searches through dictionary and encyclopedias. I see one of the comments on the video notes AI potential contributions to this effort. Note: not necessarily a believer that AI has yet captured human intelligence. Wondering though what might be your thoughts on all this -or ways to keep discovering what works.

Hi Frank, First good to hear from you! On the Multiplex the search is much more sophisticated, which it needs to be, to deal with what will be over 1,000 videos (once we add the ones from 2020.) It differs from the video showcase in that you can combine a text search with many different filters, which really helps.  Give it a try, search for algebra in the text search and combine with a grade level for instance..... In terms of AI we use a computer algorithm to find related videos but I feel this needs to be improved.

Joni: It is an interesting idea to add AI or machine learning to the queries on the Multiplex. I wonder whether you'd have to talk to someone at Netflix, Hulu, or Amazon on how they do this. I am  also working with an AI / ML expert at Indiana University who also advises Alibaba. I can get you in touch with him for a consult.

Wow, big project, Joni, and thanks for sharing.  As I was viewing the video, I was wondering if you've built in any sorts of "push" algorithms so that we could receive email invites that target us with showcased work that aligns with our "theme" interests.  So, for example, if either through our prior comments or through a short questionnaire that you could provide, participants could receive push notifications to connect with targeted themes, specific research, etc. Thanks, and I'll be interested to hear what steps you might be taking toward this.

We plan to have monthly digests on activity (plays, playlists, posts) on your presentations, as well a choice to get daily or weekly reminders when new posts come. I think that we could go further aligning peoples interest with themes. We do send newsletters now to all presenters telling them of theme of the month... but targeting by interest sounds like a great idea!

The transparency of use of AI is a key component to successful acceptance..and  trust.  Two years ago in our STEM-for-All video we included the teachers who were working with an AI researcher.  Their use of the emerging AI evolved from the year before as those teachers had competed in Lego Mindstorms that focused on AI. The researcher came to actively work with the students’ team and was a family friend and fan of Lego Mindstorms.

We can design AI, yet need to ensure that we continue to build the structure of trust and purposeful privacy into the application which the past years has been so careful to develop.  As a project coordinator, I filmed the  class in progress of using the apps which helped me see the continued roles of the teachers as they transitioned.  The AI developer and I designed questions to ask the teachers without offering them advanced info.  Their reactions were important to all of us as we found the next “stepping stones” through a rather precarious foot path!
