In order to increase the participation of women in STEAM careers, different research and education programs at the University of Puerto Rico, joined forces to create an initiative to provide opportunities, activities, and tools for the new generation of Latin women to continue careers in these disciplines The activities were designed with the collaboration of undergraduate and graduate students from the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Humanities and Art. The summit activity of the initiative was the symposium: "The power of women in science". It was divided into three main sections. The first was a series of TED talks by successful Latin women scientists, to provide role models and expose participants to different career options. During lunch, we created a space to promote dialogue between women scientists and young students, who were able to meet the invited scientists, ask questions and create a drawing of women in science that most inspired them. The symposium included an orientation section where different programs presented the opportunities and offers, they have for women. The activities have impacted more than 500 students and 47 volunteers. This video will allow the viewer to experience a journey through the design process to the implementation and evaluation of the activities from the point of view of the collaborating students. Join us to increase women's participation in STEAM!

    Hola a todas!
We need many more programs like yours! I invite all Latina STEM professionals to register with Technolochicas.org because we need all the role models to encourage our young Latinas to participate in these professions.

Imagine for a moment, your grandmothers or great-grandmothers as scientists. Surely you can relate them with richer and diverse science perspectives to contribute to the scientific development. Looking back, you will notice how many of our foremothers were dedicated solely to the home. Nowadays, we know this loss of talent has denied the world of their exceptional ideas and capacities.

Today we have demonstrated those exceptional capacities and are working tirelessly to get more women's ideas heard and to achieve a more equitable society. This video shows the initiatives carried out by various programs at the University of Puerto Rico. From educational community activities, events, and videos to the elaboration of a book. All designed to highlight the role of Latin women in STEAM and motivate girls and young women to pursue scientific careers. Keep up this good work!

Fantastico!  I am impressed with the multi-agency & cross discipline collaboration.  Is this something you plan to do every year?  Did you invite middle and high school girls to attend?  Did you include their families?  Were the TED talks recorded?  Are there cultural barriers and/or discrimination in PR for women in STEM fields?  I hope your book is published and distributed widely.

    Dear Dr. Patti Curtis

Thank you for watching and comment our video! This was the first year of this initiative, due to the success of the activity, we plan to do it every year and include other interactions with the young women, such as workshops, and visits to school. We are planning to celebrate the next Symposium in February 2021. In the first symposium, the TED talks were not recorded, but for the next symposium we will record and make them available to the public through our online platforms.

Talking from my experience as a scientist, in P.R. as in other part of the world, in some sectors there still exists some discrimination and cultural barriers for women in science, in these sectors is more likely to view a young male scientist more favorably than a woman with the same qualifications. In my experience as a professor we have a high percent of females in STEM undergraduate education, but this number drastically decrease at graduate level. Therefore this initiative arrises to recognize the contributions of Latinas in Science and establish Role models for the next generation of Puerto Ricans women in STEAM.

I'm curious about how much of your work is about providing inspiration for young Latinas, and how much you feel you need to change the world around them? Do the professors, bosses, and colleagues need inspiration and encouragement too so that they can welcome and support these young women?

Thanks for watching our video! The initiative intents to empower both the new generation , and  the current women scientist to allow them to serve as role models,  providing a space were  both generations can meet and work together.  Definitevely it is needed that we start by reconozing the acomplishment of professors and scientist to boost their selfconfidence, actitutes, and willness to serve as role models.

We have already accepted campers for this year. We have moved camp to the third week in July instead of early June. We are hoping to still have it but only time will tell. Our camp is only for girls in Oklahoma. We do target those in rural areas, less access to STEAM, and those that really need the experience rather than the shining star that has done it all.

Greetings to all! We are glad that you liked the video!

This initiative has meant a lot to me and has contributed to my personal and professional growth. Meeting enterprising women, women who have contributed so much to science and who have overcome all kinds of stereotypes has been inspirational. This project has influenced my life and my career because it has helped me to believe more in myself, in my potential and abilities and to confirm once again that, in these disciplines, my contribution is important.

Science has given me a voice! And that is the most beautiful and important thing of this initiative: It gives us an opportunity to express us, to transmit our knowledge in different scenarios and to be part of a community that promote the participation of all in STEAM.

And we are always seeking new and creative ways to promote our STEM offerings to this population. You did an amazing job as the spokesperson in the video!! If chemistry doesn't hold your attention, you obviously have talents that can take you beyond that field. Keep up the amazing work!!!

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing this fantastic initiative. If you're ever looking for additional content, feel free to browse through Twin Cities PBS' SciGirls collection. Much of our work is produced with and for Latinx communities, including our entire fourth season "Latina SciGirls," which was the first "Spanish-first" series on PBS Kids! Girls and their adult STEM mentors from diverse Latinx sub-ethnicities explore science while celebrating their language, heritage and traditions. In fact, all of SciGirls content is in both Spanish and English, and is produced using research-based best practices around cultural responsiveness and gender equity. Check us out at www.scigirlsconnect.org or www.pbskids.org/scigirls. Again, many thanks for this incredible work!

Thanks, Jennifer, for watching our video! Although our university students are bilingual, we decide to make the video in Spanish to empower Latin communities. Language should not be a barrier to have access to STEAM careers!

Because Science is spoken and done in Spanish too!

What a wonderful initiative to support women in Puerto Rico. I particularly appreciate that the efforts are being led from educational leadership within Puerto Rico, rather than from an outside institution. Can you share a little about what the mentorship training for role models entails. What are some of the challenges and best practices around role models that are emerging from this work?

In order to increase the participation of women in STEAM careers, different research and education programs at the University of Puerto Rico, joined forces to create this initiative to provide opportunities, activities, and tools for the new generation of Latin women to continue careers in these disciplines.

One of the main components of the initiative is the Role Model program, since it makes a world of difference to girls. But the effectiveness of this program relay in the effectiveness of the approach and interaction.   Role models may have an extraordinary career, but if they do not know how to interact with a group of young girls, they will not inspire them.  In order to create an effective role model program, we start by providing visibility to female scientist and professor, and training graduate students and undergraduate students in STEAM disciplines to serve as role models. The training was focused improve participants science communication skills and prepare them well so that they know:

    • How to interact with girls and inspire them in STEAM careers.
    • How create pitch messages that inspire girls in STEAM.
    • How to share personal stories along with inspirations and struggles.
    • What group supervision strategies best support girls.
    • What works and what does not in heading a hands-on activity or demonstration.

The aim of our initiative is to encourage girls and women to look beyond the lab coats and to see the possibilities for careers in STEAM.  The participants had the opportunity to listen to role models that told inspiring anecdotes of their journeys in science, their challenges, and their triumphs, and answered questions from the audience, including some thought-provoking questions from our girls and young women.

In addition, the participants rotated through several activities on the day. One of the activities that was a highlight for the students was the Science Expo, where they participated in fun and hands on demonstrations presented by the university student’s associations and nonprofit organizations. In the Science expo they were exposed to the many ways we encounter science in our everyday lives and practiced their problem-solving skills to work towards solutions. In the afternoon participants received orientation about research opportunities and the different STEAM academic programs.

This initiative not only provided a space for young women to interact with role models, it also provided  our undergraduate and graduate students the opportunity to  use their talents to deliver an empowering message to the next generation, and learn about the importance of using our knowledge to the service of society. Also, it was an opportunity to improve their communication skills, raise their voice for better opportunities and even explore new career options.

Thank you for this video and this initiative in helping introduce more women into the STEAM field. It is important for young women to see that there are in fact many successful women in STEAM and that they can achieve anything they set their minds to just as they did. As a Latina who majored in the STEM field, I understand the importance and benefits of seeing people that look like you being successful in their area of study, so thank you once again for your efforts, because we can always benefit from seeing more Latinas in science! Wonderful video!

Thank you for these projects to allow young women to see themselves as scientists, by seeing others like themselves actively pursuing their interests and dreams. When people stop envisioning scientists solely as a white male in a lab coat, a virtual door opens that may even welcome them in. Great video.

Very nice work!  Coming from the geoscience community (which has a dismal record on matters of diversity, equity and inclusion), I would appreciate your team pointing interested participants toward continued study in geoscience fields that are critical to Puerto Rico, including coastal management, hydrogeology, geohazards, geochemistry.  Thanks for your empowering efforts.
