Description: Programs across the country are interested in researching and understanding best practices to recruit, support and retain underrepresented students in STEM and computing fields. This month we will hear from four projects that provide students with exposure to career paths, research experiences, faculty mentoring and other initiatives preparing them for graduate school and the STEM and computing workforce. Come be part of the conversation. There will be a one-hour panel followed by a twenty-minute breakout session where you can share your questions and experiences.

Gates

Dr. Ann Quiroz Gates is the Senior Vice Provost at the University of Texas at El Paso. She holds the AT&T Distinguished Professorship, and she served as Chair of the Computer Science Department (2005-2008 and 2012-2020) and Associate VP of Research and Sponsored Projects (2008-2012). She directs the Computing Alliance for Hispanic-Serving Institutions (CAHSI), one of NSF’s National INCLUDES alliances that promote the importance of inclusion and equity in advancing innovation and discovery. Gupta

Dr. Preeti Gupta is responsible for strategic planning, program development, human capital development and research and evaluation for out of school time youth initiatives at the American Museum of Natural History.See Preeti's Video >>

  

   


Santisteban

Dr. Maria Santisteban is a Professor of Biology at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, a primarily undergraduate, minority serving institution, also designated as NASNTI (Native American Serving Non-Tribal Institution). She is the PI of the S-STEM NSF funded COMPASS (Creating Opportunities for Students in Science) program, which targets talented students with demonstrated financial need. She has been involved with the North Carolina Academy of Science, since 2008, and has served under various roles, notably as president (2016-2017). Dr. Santisteban is also an active member of the Genomics Education Partnership (GEP), a collaborative between over +150 faculty of primarily undergraduate institutions whose common goal is to provide opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in genomics research. Graham

Jasmin Graham is a Marine Biologist and Project Coordinator for the Marine Science Laboratory Alliance Center of Excellence. She is also the President and CEO of Minorities in Shark Sciences and has devoted her career to increasing minority participation in Marine Science. Her work is at the intersection of marine conservation, science education and social justice.See Jasmin's Video >>

  


Morreale

Dr. Patricia Morreale is the Director of the School of Computer Science and Technology at Kean University. Her research on broadening participation in computer science focuses on faculty development and research mentoring. Dr. Morreale serves as a co-lead for the North region of the Computing Alliance for Hispanic Serving Institutions (CAHSI). See Patricia's Video >>
