Developing Preservice Elementary Teachers’ Ability to Facilitate Goal-Oriente...

NSF Awards: 1621344

2017 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades K-6

This video showcases a newly funded DRK12 early design and development project that is focused on developing, piloting, and collecting validity evidence for a set of performance tasks delivered within an online simulated classroom environment in order to improve preservice elementary teachers’ ability to orchestrate discussions in math and science. The overall goal of this research is to develop a validity basis for the use of such tools as formative assessment tasks that can be integrated within educator preparation programs to increase the amount, variety, and quality of clinical practice opportunities currently available to preservice elementary teachers. In this video, the principal investigators illustrate the promise of this research and development work and discuss the unique learning opportunities that are afforded by these tools for both preservice teachers and teacher educators. The presenters also share what inspired them to develop these performance tasks and how they envision such tasks might support teacher educators’ instructional goals and complement other clinical experiences within a program.
