Grades 9-12

Urban students engage in experiential learning in STEM at the Chicago High School for Agricultural Sciences (CHSAS) where they learn challenging STEM concepts while managing an 80 acre farm located within the Chicago city limits. This inclusive STEM school provides a setting where students are "learning to do and doing to learn ." Every CHSAS student eventually specializes in one of six pathways (horticulture, animal science, food science, biotechnology, agriculture finance, or agriculture mechanics), allowing them to develop college, career and community-engagement readiness, alongside of workplace learning. The critical components of school’s unique design creates opportunity structures for students to become STEM capable, especially in agricultural fields, in a learning environment that fosters creativity, communication and collaboration. This combination of college preparation with career and technical education positions urban students for success in STEM majors and careers.
