In this presentation we focus on one line of our research project, developing socio-metacognitive expertise, students’ ability to understand, monitor and manage collective discourse in order to improve it’s quality over time. To accomplish this aim, we developed two models (1) a model of optimal collaborative discourse or desired discourse activity; and (2) a model of activity that would help students learn how to monitor and regulate team discourse over time to align it with the desired activity. We then created a system to articulate these models to students and see if we could devise ways to automate the assessment of discourse quality so as to provide students with automated feedback. In this video we present the motivation and rationale behind our design idea, the CREATE system prototype, and findings associated with our approach to supporting online students.
