SimScientists Assessments Physical Science Links

NSF Awards: 1221614

2016 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades 6-8

This video shows components of a system of assessments developed in the SimScientists Assessments: Physical Science Links project. The components of this system include activities that enhance curricula in middle school physical science and provide feedback to students and teachers via embedded assessment. It also includes benchmark assessments that can be used at the end of a unit. The activities and assessments use interactive, computer simulations to make visible the unseen causal mechanisms of a variety of phenomena, including changes in matter and motion, energy transfer and transformation, and waves. Students engage in the practices of science as well as the content as they use the simulations to complete tasks and answer questions. The multi-dimensional tasks are designed to enhance science curricula, instruction, and assessment in ways that support the implementation of the Framework for K-12 Science Education and the Next Generation Science Standards.
