Inquiry Primed: Mitigating the Effects of Stereotype Threat in Science

NSF Awards: 1313713

2016 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades 6-8

Concentrating on 8th-grade science instruction using an inquiry-based approach, this project focuses on teachers as agents of change in reducing the effects of stereotype threat in science classrooms.

CAST developed and piloted a prototype web-based professional development course to help middle-school science teachers understand stereotype threat and use approaches to incorporate mitigation strategies to reduce the likely effects of threat in their everyday instruction.
