Merlin Bird ID App

NSF Awards: 1010818

2015 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades K-6, Grades 6-8, Grades 9-12, Undergraduate, Graduate, Adult learners

The Merlin Bird ID app works like magic to help you identify birds—but it’s based on science. Answer five questions about a bird you saw, then Merlin shows you a list of best matches, customized to your location and time of year. Merlin knows what birds are around you by tapping into the eBird database, with more than 70 million sightings from citizen-science participants across North America. The public also “taught” Merlin how they describe birds with more than 3 million descriptors collected through online activities. After you identify your bird, Merlin helps you explore sounds, maps, and more information. Download the app at AllAboutBirds.org/Merlin
