STEM Integration in the Digital Forensics Science Learning Environment Grades...

Grades 9-12

Digital Forensics is a rapidly advancing discipline within Computer Science that intersects with many STEM disciplines and underpins cyber security. As the cost of cybercrime has grown exponentially, so has the need for US citizens who are trained to combat this type of crime.

The Cyber Sleuth Lab is a dynamic learning environment designed to introduce young women, underrepresented and underserved students in 9th -12th grade to careers and concepts in digital forensics and cyber security. Specifically, students are cast in the role of investigators and introduced to fundamental concepts in Digital Forensic Science through realistic case scenarios and hands-on exercises.  Interviews with subject matter experts and career role models are incorporated into the curriculum to provide a real-world context for the material. Students are encouraged to picture themselves as cybersleuths as they develop a personal road map drawing from available scholarships, training opportunities, internships and job openings in the field.

The Cyber Sleuth Lab also provides professional development, lesson plans and added classroom support for teachers.  Materials are provided for teachers to link the curriculum to the broader concepts of ethics in technology, privacy and digital citizenship.
