Broadening Identities for Diverse Groups Engaging with STEM (BRIDGES)

NSF Awards: 1657194

2019 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades 6-8

The UNCG BRIDGES project engages diverse middle school youth and teachers in out-of-school learning that integrates science, engineering, and computing to address environmental problems. Leveraging youths' enthusiasm to “make a difference,” the hypothesis is that this integrated approach will strengthen youths' STEM-linked identities, broaden their STEM academic and career pathways, provide a model for meaningful STEM integration, and nurture teachers’ learning. The project targets youth during early adolescence, a key time when they develop interests and identities toward academic learning that enable or prevent access to STEM academic and career opportunities. Youths' teachers are brought on as co-designers of the STEM learning experiences and are supported in the development of an after-school STEM club using the BRIDGES pedagogical framework. This framework anchors our curricular choices and highlights problem-solving and "doing good" with science, engineering, and computing.
