WGBH (a leading producer of educational STEM media) and Education Development Center (experts in how technology can influence and enhance teaching and learning) are collaborating on a new project that uses the power of story and relatable real-life problems—along with four curious monkeys!—to engage preschoolers and their parents in exploring foundational computational thinking (CT) concepts.

The overarching research question the project aims to address is: Can parent/child engagement with digital media and hands-on activities improve children’s early learning of computational thinking? To answer this question, the project team is using an iterative research and design process to: develop a curriculum that identifies the scope of CT that is appropriate for preschoolers; create media and hands-on activities based on this curriculum; develop a set of CT learning tasks; and investigate how learning can be supported through successive interactions.

Following the creation of these curricular resources, an experimental impact study will use a mixed-methods approach to investigate how these resources support the development of young children’s computational thinking and enhance parents’ comfort and interest in the subject. Through this process, the project team will build broader knowledge about how to design developmentally appropriate resources promoting CT for preschool children and their parents.
