Grades 9-12

Five high school students are helping me to understand the future of tropical forests in a changing climate. I’m Ty Taylor, NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellow. This film demonstrates a reproducible model for collaboration in education and research, pioneered by BioTech High School in Miami, Florida. BioTech partners with Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden (featured here) and the Miami Zoo to provide scientific education through internships in active research projects.

My high school students are using instrumentation to measure tree physiology. They are asking how different tree species are adapted to either stay cool, or conserve water. This experience teaches the students that science is not only a list of facts, it is a continuous process of investigation and debate. In trade, they push my work forward, and I practice mentoring the next generation. Their advanced development in evidence-based critical thinking, and clear communication of results, will serve them and the world wherever they go from here.

Collections institutions like botanic gardens, zoos, herbariums, and museums occur in many cities, providing an opportunity for communities to develop local research and STEM education partnerships for a mutual benefit to science and society.
