Moving Next Generation Science Standards into Practice: A Middle School Ecolo...

NSF Awards: 1418235

2018 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades 6-8

Our video summarizes the Disruptions in Ecosystems  project, an NSF-funded project that designed an NGSS-aligned middle school ecology unit and accompanying professional development model. The unit consists of five chapters, each focusing on a different type of ecosystem disruption, covering MS-LS2 Ecosystems: Interactions, Energy, and Dynamics. The materials include a student book and an extensive teacher's guide, which have been field tested and revised over the last four years (three field test and revision cycles, 25 New York City school teachers each cycle). The professional development model has been tested and revised as well with the field test teachers. The second field test version of the curriculum received a "High Quality NGSS Design if Improved" rating from Achieve's EQuIP review, and further revisions are underway to address the areas that needed improvement.
