Empowering Young Girls in STEM

NSF Awards: 0835854, 1346821, 1420351

2018 (see original presentation & discussion)

Grades K-6

Our video shows an NSF-funded research project that promoted STEM motivation in children. One source of gender gaps in STEM is that girls have fewer opportunities than boys to play with science and technology-related games and toys. We found that 6-year-old girls given programming experience reported higher technology interest and self-efficacy compared with girls without this experience, and did not exhibit a significant gender gap relative to boys’ interest and self-efficacy. This project demonstrates exciting new ways to promote children's early motivation in STEM.
