Undergraduate

This video highlights ongoing work on the development, piloting, and validation of a set of performance-based tasks delivered within a simulated classroom environment in order to improve preservice elementary teachers’ ability to orchestrate discussions in math and science. Now in its second year, this DRK12 early design and development project has developed tasks, a simulated classroom and five student avatars, who viewers of the video will meet and see in action as they participate in discussion. The goal of this video is to give viewers a sense of the potential these tools have in teacher education and professional development settings. We share our reasons for focusing on simulated classrooms and for focusing on the high-leverage teaching practice of leading a discussion, and we show what it looks like for a preservice teacher to step into the simulator.
